Previous to planning the lighting, we went to do some research into lighting in music videos, how its used and how it effects the video.
The following link explained to us how the light can emphasise elements, control the mood of a scene and change the emotion of a character based on the direction.

After reading through this link we learned several factors of lighting method that can change a scene as well knowing how to use it in our project.
The factors were:
Before we moved onto the recording of the music video we had to consider and plan out the lighting that we would use in our video. This is important as lighting can drastically change the mood and emotion of a scene, for example a shadow on an entity because they light if being directed from the left hand side will create a dark right side.
Due to our location choice being the school theatre we have the ability of choosing several high quality light colours, positions and effects that we could choose from. Although the many colour options were appealing and could be useful in addition to effects such as strobe and fade, we decided the best option was to go basic and choose a white light facing the members of the video with no effect as it would be simple, wouldn't have any dark issues in the recording and we wanted it to look similar to the the (BOOTS) advert.
Since in our video we are aiming for a lively, up beat music video where all the cast members are dancing and singing along, we decided the best lighting option would be direct white light on cast members, this light will be a good distance from the members so it will provide enough brightness on the video without obstructing the member's view by exposing them to too much bright light.

- Light direction
- Light quality - hard light or soft light
- Light colour
- Light intensity
- Contrast ratio

Planning: Camera Equipment
Before any recording was even considered we chose to see the equipment we had available and to learn how to use them. The camera related equipment we had were the DSLR camera that our footage would be filmed on, a tripod to keep the filming at a consistent and stable frame of shot and a white backdrop behind the casting.
The video camera we will be using is the Canon 1100D. The reason we have chosen this is because as you can see below we have done some research into the camera and decided which is the best suited camera to use for our filming.
To give an example of the quality that is produced by these video cameras, I went on youtube to find a sample video showing some footage that people have recorded using the camera to get an idea of what footage the camera can produce. This allows us to see what type of filming we are capable of producing in for music video.
Below is a video user guide that I have found on youtube by another user of the camera so that I am able to reflect on it to make it easier for us to use the camera when it comes to the time where we have to film. We have chosen the 1100D model as we feel it is very advanced and gives you a wide variety of options and settings that we can choose from when it comes to filming our music video.
To do some practice with the camera, I took it upon myself to take some photographs of the main cast member (Sam) and see how it is used. The following photos are evidence of myself practising with the camera with Sam.
The 3 photos above are the ones taken in good lighting to get a good idea of what it would look like, to see what it would look like compared to dim lighting, we moved to a darker area of the building and did the same procedure.
The 4 photos above show are taking photos of Sam in a darker area of the building, from this we understood that a darker area would give Sam's face more shadow and connote to to a dark or sad themed music type. Since our music video is aimed to be lively and up beat we decided this lighting was unsuitable and we would stick with a brighter area.
